From concept to market

Creating a ready for the market product and establish all different aspects important in this (CCC certifications, assemblation processes and planning, client and producer agreements, technical drawings, invoices, datasheets etc.) In this process, I gained insights in how to balance conceptual ideation (‘everything is possible’- attitude) with business aspects like feasibility and viability

Computer modeling

By detailing and finalizing the "Copperhead Snake" pendant lamp, I gained proficient skills in the Solid Works 3D modeling and rendering software

Missing user focus

On a personal development level, I gained insights in my drive to incorporate user research within different phases of the design process, instead of designing purely on a gut feeling. In the product design process Blom & Blom went through, I missed this user perspective and focus.
The focus of this internship was mostly on the end phases of the design process: design details and final issues, assemblation and manufactering.

Company and project info

Blom & Blom is a design studio with a passion for forgotten items from forgotten places. They carefully restore and craft industrial artifacts from items recovered from abandoned factories.

As a design intern, my tasks mostly lay in designing a pendant lamp made of copper tubes for their client Greenland. The lamp would be part of the redesign of Greenland's interior of one-hundred shops in China. For the Blom&Blom studio, this 'Copperhead Snake' pendant lamp is considered as the first step into their own production line Blom&Blom Editions

Sara is a person who is easy to work with. She was participating in discussions and giving her opinion from day one - Elmer Lise, Company coach

Process

The focus of this project was mainly about the end phases of the design process: designing the pendant's details, solving technical and assembling issues, design and develop assembling and manufacturing proccesses and manuals.

The process had an exploratory and crafting approach. I was 'getting my hands dirty' in the workshop to craft and try out ideas. On the other hand, I was also working 'at my desk' to solve problems and ideate by means of 3d modelling, as well as through contacting different experts in the field of regulations (CC-certifications), hardware (LED drivers), paint (seal and protect copper tubes), and so on.

Sara's assertiveness, critic point of view, organised work process makes her very valuable for the company - Elmer Lise, Company coach
